In the wake of the climate crisis, Berlin is increasingly confronted with heatwaves, dry spells and resulting water shortages. These challenges, coupled with a strained personnel situation in green-space maintenance and rising costs, require innovative solutions with regard to water as a resource. Tegel Projekt is working towards intelligent water management in the context of the sponge city, which aims, among other things, to utilise service water (pre-cleaned rainwater) for plant irrigation. One possible solution could, for example, be the use of irrigation robots as part of intelligent water management in order to promote a healthy plant population in a targeted and resource-saving manner and thus increase the quality of life in the city. In addition to the ecological benefits of this approach, the declared aim is also to realise economic savings potential in the long-term.
Overall, this approach would strengthen the resilience to the effects of climate change and contribute to the vision of an adaptable and sustainable urban environment.
