Balancing biomass

Description

The accounting of biomass (organic matter produced or accumulated by plants) is a crucial process aimed at gaining a detailed understanding of the natural resources available. By carefully collecting and analysing data, it is possible to develop effective and data-driven strategies for the sustainable use of biomass. The knowledge gained is used, for example, to determine the amount of biomass that can be extracted for purposes such as thermal utilisation without impairing the vitality of nature.

The integration of this knowledge makes it possible to avoid an oversupply or undersupply of nutrients and thus damage to the habitats of flora and fauna. At the same time, the utilisation of internal resources for energy generation opens up potential for economic savings.

To date, there has been a lack of continuous transparency regarding the available resources on the Berlin TXL site in order to achieve these goals. The extensive landscape park, the neighbourhood park in the Schumacher Quartier, the Trapezfuge and the Looppark are of particular interest here.
